Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty as Manchester United held Barcelona in a cagey Champions League semi-final, first leg at the Nou Camp. Try out free bets on your next soccer match

Gabriel Milito needlessly threw his hands up to block a Ronaldo header in the box in only the second minute.

But Ronaldo wasted the opportunity by side-footing wide from the spot.

Barcelona dominated the game without creating much, although substitute Thierry Henry almost caught out United keeper Edwin van der Sar late on.

United will be rightly pleased with their defensive display, especially having lost Nemanja Vidic before the game to a stomach problem.

But they may live to regret Ronaldo’s early miss from the spot when the two sides meet again at Old Trafford next Tuesday.

They could not have imagined a better opportunity to grab an away goal and silence the home fans early on. free bets free bets

When the ball was played into the centre, Ronaldo went up for the header and Milito stuck out an arm to block.

Barcelona protested Milito’s innocence but referee Massimo Busacca correctly pointed to the spot.

The Argentine defender was, however, given a let-off when Ronaldo opened his body and screwed his spot-kick wide of the upright.

Barcelona responded by taking a grip on the game, probing in and around the visitors’ area.

But United’s reworked backline - with Wes Brown at centre-back and Owen Hargreaves filling in at right-back - held firm.

Van der Sar was largely untroubled, except for the problems he caused himself with a couple of errant clearances.

United had vowed to attack but they were forced to play a containing game as Barcelona played possession football, with Lionel Messi at the heart of everything.

Wayne Rooney found himself almost in a defensive role and Ronaldo had little say in the game, being forced to pick the ball up deep and was wasteful with the odd free-kick opportunity that came his way.

He was almost handed a chance to atone for his early penalty miss when he latched on to an errant and dangerous pass from Andres Iniesta.

Ronaldo looked set for a run on goal but Rafael Marquez got his body in the way to shepherd the ball back to Victor Valdes and United’s penalty appeals came to nothing.

Samuel Eto’o had his first sight of goal just before half-time, but after cutting inside Rio Ferdinand his effort was charged down by Brown.

Barcelona continued to dictate play after the break, with United fortunate that Eto’o chose not to go to ground in the box after skipping past Ferdinand.

Messi was the game’s outstanding performer

When he squared he could not find  free bets a team-mate and a minute later the Cameroon striker shot poorly into the side-netting after a neat move involving Messi and Deco.

Michael Carrick could have proved himself an unlikely hero as he did brilliantly to weave his way into the box, but he then wasted his good work by firing into the side-netting rather than square for a team-mate.

Messi was replaced by Krkic Bojan and though Barcelona continued to enjoy the bulk of possession, they looked short of a cutting edge without their most potent weapon.

Henry was handed 15 minutes to show his worth and he looked keen to impress as he fired in a shot that Van der Sar managed to parry to safety.

However, there was to be no dramatic ending to a game that promised so much after such a splendid start.

www.iwantfreebets.com Skipper John Terry insists Chelsea’s players are 100% behind manager Avram Grant as they prepare for a crucial few days that will define their season.

The Blues play Liverpool on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at Anfield, before a Premier League showdown with Manchester United.

Terry claimed reports of player unrest at the club were wide of the mark.

“These suggestions are laughable - we speak openly and things are sorted out there and then,” he said.

“We are totally behind the manager. There are no people walking out the door and talking behind each other’s backs.

“It is bizarre because since Avram took over, one thing we’ve done is that if any players are unhappy or have a problem, we get together and speak our minds.”

We are coming here to score goals and put the pressure right on Liverpool
John Terry

Despite his team reaching the Champions League final four and lying a close second in the Premier League behind Man Utd, Grant remains unpopular with sections of Chelsea’s support.

But if he can guide Chelsea to triumph at the third time of asking in a Champions League semi-final against Liverpool, the Israeli may yet win those fans over.

Terry pledged Chelsea will go to Anfield looking to attack.

“We are coming here to win the game, not to shut up shop - we want to score goals and put the pressure right on Liverpool.

“It’s going to be tough for us, but the away goals we can possibly take back to the Bridge will help us in the long run.

“We have shown great character and togetherness. We have got the players to go on and win the game and progress to the next stage.

Grant has Lampard (left) available to play against Liverpool

“We have lost to Liverpool on the two previous occasions and that burning feeling is something that will never go away, but one thing that will ease it is to go on and reach the final and lift the trophy.

“That trophy is something I want to get my hands on as Chelsea captain and for the club to go down in history.”

Terry admitted: “We’ve had our ups and downs over the course of the season.

“But we have proved that whatever team is on the pitch, we have enough strength, character and big players to go on and win.”

Grant is refusing to dwell on Chelsea’s past Champions League defeats against Liverpool.

“We can make history and we will concentrate on this and not about anything else,” he said.

“We lost here twice but that is history, and now we can create it. That is what is important.

“We have come a long way since we drew against Rosenborg and now we can create history - and this makes me excited.”

Chelsea have also been boosted by the news that Frank Lampard will return to the squad.

The 29-year-old has missed his side’s last game to be with his mother who is suffering from pneumonia, and Grant was full of praise for the England midfielder.

“I respect very much Frank and what he is doing for the club,” said Grant.

“It is not an easy situation. He has given everything for the club and trained by himself.

“I gave him all the freedom to do as he wanted. Sometimes there are more important things than football, but he is available to play.”

Barcelona striker Thierry Henry was unable to take part in training on Monday morning because of illness.

The France international, who was an unused substitute in Saturday’s goalless league draw against Espanyol, was suffering from a fever and it remains to be seen if he will be fit in time for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Manchester United.

Also absent from Monday’s training session, which was conducted behind close doors, were Ronaldinho, Lilian Thuram, Jose Edmilson and back-up goalkeeper Albert Jorquera.

Ronaldinho and Jorquera are both injury absentees, while Edmilson remained in the gym with a back problem. Thuram was given the morning off by the club but was due to train in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, defender Oleguer Presas has been given the all clear to return to action after recovering from a hand injury.

Barca will train again on Tuesday evening, 24 hours before their Champions League semi-final first leg against United at the Nou Camp. Free Bets

www.iwantfreebets.com Guus Hiddink’s agent has ruled out any possibility of the Dutchman taking over as manager of Chelsea.

A weekend newspaper report claimed the Russia coach was being lined up to take over from Avram Grant at Chelsea.

But his agent Cees van Nieuwenhuizen told BBC Sport: “There is no chance of Guus going to Chelsea. He wants to end his career in international management.

“He signed a new deal in March that runs up to the 2010 World Cup and always honours his contracts.”

Grant’s position as Chelsea boss has been under scrutiny ever since the surprise defeat by Tottenham in the Carling Cup final in February.

This could be a make-or-break week for the Israeli, with Chelsea playing Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday and then Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Hiddink, who took over as Russia boss in the summer of 2006 and guided the nation to Euro 2008, has been frequently linked with Chelsea.

Van Nieuwenhuizen said: “I don’t know where these stories about Guus come from and I want to put an end to them once and for all.

“It isn’t about money for Guus. It’s about him having signed a contract and wanting to get on with his job with Russia.”

The 61-year-old’s initial contract with Russia had been set to finish in July but, after protracted negotiations, he signed an extension in March.

Reading striker free betsLeroy Lita has returned early from his loan spell at Charlton as the Royals seek top flight safety.

Reading manager Steve Coppell invoked a 24-hour recall clause in the loan to bring back Lita, who has scored three goals in his last eight matches.

Reading, one point above the Premier League relegation zone, have not scored in their last four games.

Lita had joined Charlton in March for a month but the loan was extended to the end of the season.

“Leroy has been playing regular football for Charlton and will be raring to go,” said Coppell whose team have the second-worst goal difference in the Premier League.

“I made the call to Alan Pardew. We agreed it would be beneficial to bring Leroy back now that it’s mathematically impossible for Charlton to get into the play-offs.

England midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard will be available for Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final clash between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Lampard missed two Chelsea games free bets last week to be at the hospital bedside of his mother, who has pneumonia.

But his agent Steve Kutner said in a statement: “Although still very ill, her condition has now stabilised.”

Gerrard has been passed fit for Liverpool after training on Monday following his neck injury.

News conference: Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez

The Reds skipper missed Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham because of the problem but is now set to start at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez confirmed Gerrard’s fitness at a news conference on Monday.

The Spaniard also made light of rumours that Chelsea could be set to bid for Gerrard for a third time at the end of this season.

Chelsea manager Avram Grant has described him as “the player of the year in England, and maybe in Europe, because of the influence he has on the team”.

Benitez said: “We have enough experience to know that if anyone asks me or Avram about a good player, we will say they’re a good player.

“If I was asked about (Didier) Drogba or (Frank) Lampard, I would say that they’re a very good player.

“When we played against Inter Milan (in the last 16), people were saying that Inter wanted Gerrard, and hopefully it will be the same in the final against Barcelona or Manchester United.

“Stevie is a fantastic player and he’s 100% focused on his career with Liverpool.

News conference: Chelsea boss Avram Grant

“He’s fit for the game. Maybe after he’s scored the winning goal in the semi-final, maybe he will be worth more.”

Lampard is likely to be in the starting XI for the Blues after missing the Premier League matches against Wigan and Everton.

His return is a boost for Grant, with German international midfielder Michael Ballack doubtful because of a hamstring problem.

Liverpool however only need 1 point from their remaining 3 games to guarantee 4th Position in the league. They fielded a much weakened team against Fulham and still won comfortably. I think over the two legs Liverpool will just have enough to beat Chelsea, but football is a funny old game.
